The Impact of Fostering Pets

Fostering pets is more than just providing a temporary home; it’s a lifeline for animals in need. Further, fostering directly contributes to the well-being of local rescues and shelters. By fostering, you’re not only offering a loving environment to a pet in need, but also freeing up space for other animals to find their forever homes. Just this week, FOX 5 Atlanta shared that Clayton County animal advocates are desperate for fosters as their shelter sees overcrowding. Shelter overcrowding is a problem everywhere, yet, Georgia tops the list of states with the highest euthanasia rates in shelters. My goal in sharing this blog post about the impact of fostering pets is to inspire fellow Georgia residents to consider fostering. Whether you partner with a shelter in Atlanta or a nearby community, fostering is a fantastic way to spend time with pets without a longterm commitment.

  • Provides a Home Environment: Fostering allows animals to experience a home-like setting, which can reduce stress and improve their overall health and behavior.
  • Socialization and Training: Fostering provides a chance for pets to interact with people and other animals, helping them become more socialized and easier to adopt.
  • Reduces Shelter Stress: Overcrowding in shelters can lead to stress and health issues in animals. Fostering helps alleviate this burden by providing temporary homes.
  • Frees Up Space: Fosters allow more animals to be rescued from dangerous situations.
  • Enhances Adoptability: Fostering can help animals become more adoptable by showcasing their personalities and behaviors in a home environment.
  • Provides Valuable Feedback: Fosters can provide valuable insights to rescue organizations about an animal’s personality, needs, and potential match with a forever home.

  • Fulfills a Sense of Purpose: Fostering can be incredibly rewarding, providing a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
  • Connection without Commitment: Fostering allows those that do not have the ability to commit to pet parenting longterm to connect with animals for as long as they need or for a pre-determined amount of time. Active fosters often need back-up fosters when they travel, for example. If you have two weeks to help, that pet and foster would love the support.
  • Allows for Trial Runs: If you have a pet and have considered adding to your family, fostering allows you to introduce your existing pet(s) to other pets and, thereby, helps you decide if your pet is ready for a mate and, if so, what personality would be the best match.
  • Low/No Cost Pet Parenting: Pet parenting can be expensive, which is why many people don’t adopt. When you  foster, the pet’s veterinary care and diet are often sponsored by the rescue or shelter thanks to generous donors and partnerships with local vets and large pet food brands.
  • Brings People Together: Fostering is a great way to expand your pet-loving social circle. You’ll meet other fosters, volunteers, and leaders in your local community. Plus, you’ll learn about pet-related events that your rescue or shelter is participating in locally.

How Fostering Helps the Animal Welfare Community

  • Reduces Euthanasia Rates: Fostering helps reduce the number of animals euthanized due to overcrowding. Unfortunately, shelters have maximum capacities. Right now, more pets enter shelters than get adopted, tragically causing kill rates to rise. Read more about capacity issues across Metro Atlanta here and here.
  • Supports Rescue Organizations: Not only does fostering drive down kill rates, fostering frees up resources for rescue organizations to focus on rescuing and rehabilitating more animals.
  • Creates a Ripple Effect: Fostering inspires others to get involved in animal welfare and creates a positive ripple effect within the community.
  • Promotes Compassion and Awareness: Fostering can raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare and the need for responsible pet ownership.
